Reflections of the Millennium Personnel Corp. Interns

Internship breeds Confidence; So far, so good!

Posted By admin On Monday, March 28th 2011
I am currently one month into my internship at Millennium Personnel and things have been smooth sailing so far. Despite the short amount of time, I have noticed personal improvements with my people skills and multitasking abilities. At first, I was hesitant when answering
the phones. I would intentionally let it ring a couple times with the hopes that someone else would answer it. Of course, this strategic avoidance technique did not go unnoticed by my managers. They stressed
the importance of the multitasking and having my priorities around the office set. First and foremost, the phones deserve the most attention.You never know if a potential client, looking for temporary staff
might be calling. Caller ID doesn't inform you what people are
calling about; the only way to know is to answer. Now, I usually answer on the first ring with the scripted greeting spilling from my lips at a clear and friendly tone.

The next priority is greeting and helping potential job applicants who come into the office for walk-in interviews. People usually walk in looking somewhat confused and/or nervous at the prospect of an interview. They don’t know what to expect specifically. My task is to greet them in a friendly manner, hand over their resumes to one of the managers, assist with any questions they have about paperwork and administer typing tests. Things can sometimes get hectic when dealing with new applicants. There are days when very few people walk into the office looking for work, and then there are days when this place is like Grand Central Station at rush hour. My third priority is whatever other duties the managers ask of me. This could range from making calls or sending emails to applicants about potential assignments, running errands outside of the office, or writing a new blog. But the top priority is always answering calls.

Since I've been here, several new interns have joined us, thus leaving me in the position of showing them the ropes. Funny to think that with only one month under my belt, I am already considered a veteran here. Mentoring new interns also plays into my multitasking abilities;
I have to walk them through common office duties and make sure that
they are confident in their own abilities before letting them tackle the tasks on their own. Not only does this internship present a learning process, but it also calls upon me to teach the newbies in order to
ensure that the office operates at a proficient and professional manner.

Mistakes Guaranteed…but Appreciated

Posted By admin On Tuesday, March 1st 2011
Before entering Millennium Personnel, I had only a vague notion of what an internship entailed. I had heard horror stories of interns who were worked to the ground or whose bosses were so demanding and rude that they felt dehumanized. Well, that was certainly not the case here.

Upon entering, I was greeted in a very friendly manner that helped to diffuse the tension. I was excited to see that there were other interns there to commiserate with. We were given detailed instructions on how to answer the phone, according to the needs of the caller. Additionally, understanding how to prioritize calls was important. I currently work retail and have interned at another office and am embarrassed to say that I never truly understood how to use the phone. Even more important was the greeting and the way one spoke to the caller. I admit I bungled the first call I answered, forgetting to ask for the name of the caller and the reason for the call. In any other office setting, I might have received a reprimand, however, the office manager kindly instructed me to obtain that information.

One of the managers told us that nothing we did could cause the company to collapse. That simple sentence lifted an enormous burden off of my shoulders. At retail, messing up calls could have meant lost customers or an angry store manager. Being able to make mistakes will be the greatest reward from this internship because egregious errors elsewhere might cost me a position at other jobs.

The best part of the day was that the job was not repetitive or dull. For example, one intern had to find applicants in the file cabinet; I had to create a list of e-mail addresses that another intern had to use for the purposes of social networking. Next, the three of us brainstormed different ways of advertising this employment agency. I barely had any experience in advertising, however, I benefited from learning from the other two interns. I look forward to future days when I am given more responsibilities.
