Reflections of the Millennium Personnel Corp. Interns

My Millennium Experience

Posted By admin On Tuesday, November 15th 2011

When I came into Millennium Personnel looking for a job, never in a million years did I expect the manager to offer me an internship opportunity. I accepted this opportunity for many reasons. One of them being that I have close to no experience in office work and that alone will make it almost impossible for me to find a job anywhere. I appreciated Lanie, the manager, tremendously at the moment because she was able to overlook my lack of experience and focus on my potential instead. From this internship I plan to take a lot with me to my next job. I will be able to gain the experience necessary for me to get that job that I worked so hard for in school. It will be a short experience level but it is still more than what I had before getting the internship. With working my hardest and showing Lanie and Stephanie that I am a reliable and responsible worker, I am also ensuring my reference for my next job so that they can explain to my next employer how I am as a worker. Also, working side by side to them, I will learn the tricks of the trade because of how experienced they are. It’s always a pleasure to work next to two individuals that will only help you gain knowledge and experience.

In this internship, I hope to learn all that I will be unable to learn on my own. For example, I only knew about Quickbooks because of some of the jobs that I wanted to apply for required knowledge on it. But now, little by little, I am learning how to work with it and I will be able to tell my next employer that I’m not an expert on it but that I know the basics and that I am a fast learner. With the mini meetings that Lanie has us do from time to time, I will learn exactly what to say and what to do with certain situation because of the activity she calls the ‘hot seat’. Those activity and meetings are to prepare me and the other interns for day to day situations that can potentially happen in the work place. Also, because of her meetings, I was able to get over my fear of interviews a bit more. This helps me a lot, due to my interview anxiety that I have. What also help me are the cold callings. This helps with my fear of talking to other people.

This internship has been the best thing that I could have happened to me right now. I’m unemployed and I could have been home doing nothing but instead I am working on my experience with wonderful people.

“I’m gonna make him a JOB offer he can’t refuse!” The Godfather mirrors today’s job market…

Posted By admin On Tuesday, November 1st 2011

One lazy afternoon I was watching one of my favorite movies of all time, The Godfather.  The quotes that came from this movie have lived on in pop culture since the movie was out and have been referenced in different commercials and movies alike.  I have decided to find a few of these quotes and compare them to our current job market situation with the hope of providing some useful information to people who are still searching for a job and have the same love for  The Godfather movies as I do.
“Don Corleone, I am honored and grateful that you have invited me to your home on the wedding day of your daughter.”Luca Brasi
First impressions and being grateful are very important when going on your very first interviewer for your potential job.  Always research the type of position that you are interviewing for, and know the name of your interviewer to politely greet them when you first meet them.  Be sure to thank them for the opportunity to meet and for the chance to interview for that position.  As in any interview remember to come in and dress professionally, dressing for the job will show the interviewer you took the time to prepare for this interview.
“I don’t like violence, Tom. I’m a businessman. Blood is a big expense.” Sollozzo
Solloza is one of my favorite characters in the whole series.  Every job seeker should think of themselves as a businessman who is selling their own skills and services to companies.  Many times frustration and anger makes us say or do things in the workplace or an interview that will undoubtedly cost you the position or even your job.  Patience is a virtue and going into an interview or work with a clear head will help you stay more relaxed and concentrate on the job at hand.  In the end you will gain more by dusting your shoulders off and beginning a new day fresh.
“I want you to see what he’s got under his fingernails.”Don Vito
Both job seekers and recruiters can relate to this quote.  Both are trying to get the best deal for their self gain.  Recruiters want the best person for the job they are trying to fill in their company, while spending the least amount of money.  Interviews are meant to find out the most about a person in the least amount of time.  One is more likely to say something incriminating when under pressure, and this may not only cost you the job, but may also cost the company money.  References should always be up to date and make sure the information in your resume is accurate and most importantly, the truth.  Job seekers should also find out as much about the company as possible.  Companies with shady histories or economic troubles can spell trouble for yourself in the future so keep in mind that just because they are offering you a job doesn’t mean they are economically sound or the nicest people around.

“I’m gonna make him an offer he can’t refuse.” Don Corleone

Finally, I had to include possibly the most overused quote in movie history! One can be grateful for a job offer but make sure you understand clearly any contracts that you sign and read over any company policies before making your decision.  Get your offers down in writing, especially if you feel that they are too good to be true.  This will insure that when you start your job there are no confusions about your pay rate, schedule etc.  Make sure you know as much about the company before doing any business with them until you are comfortable and confident you can trust and perform the responsibilities that you will be given.
