Today is my first day as an intern at Millennium Personnel. I am really excited about it. I am hoping to gain valuable experience and learn new things that will help me land the job that I want, which is as a administrative assistant, and help me in my future career goals in business administration. I have read a few blog posts from other interns and began to feel more comfortable and confident in the company. I am also learning basic receptionist duties, such as answering the phones and conducting courtesy interviews. I am looking forward to gaining skills and experience that will help me in the long run while I’m having fun in the process.

First impressions are important that is why I hope I gave a good impression my first day as an intern. I’m not certain if I did, usually I feel people generally like me but sometimes I know I can give the wrong impression. This internship took me by surprise because I was initially looking for at least a part time job. But, when Lainie told me that it would involve social media, marketing, and a bit of PR that definitely caught my attention. It’s ironic because before college I got the impression that once I get my degree it would be relatively easy to find a decent job based on that degree and the contacts that I would meet throughout my undergraduate career. Now that I am a month away from graduation I can clearly see that is not the case. I spent a lot of money going to school in London thinking that it would make me stand out and perhaps it still will but as of late I am very humbled because I realize that I’m really not that special and even though I have had nine or more jobs…so what. The fact that I am struggling to even get a temporary job at the moment (even though I have had several in the past) tells me two things; The economy is so bad that I am now in competition with veterans in the industry and second I am going to have to work that much harder to stand out and find my niche.
Every since, this recession started things have definitely been harder for me. I’ve never struggled to find work and although I have had ups in the last 18 months there have been much more downs financially which affects the rest of my life. But it has also helped me understand what I want to do and what I want out of a job because I have worked a few jobs that just aren’t for me.
I was happy to see on my first day that everyone was pretty nice and polite. I wasn’t sure when I first walked in if that would be the case. I also appreciated the open office lay out and that I could speak to anyone if I needed any help or even had a general comment about something. That certainly makes me more comfortable and personally more productive. The feeling of working in a cubicle with little or no communication from the rest of the world and having a boss look down on me is very uncomfortable. First days are sometimes a glimpse of what is to come and if that is the case I think I will be fairly happy here. On our company’s LinkedIn profile there are a number of groups that write articles and contribute to blogs and eventually I hope that I can contribute myself. Furthermore, I would love to write some press releases and do things involved with marketing and advertising the company. Often times, my generation thinks were very sophisticated in social media and market research but when you have to tune those skills to work efficiently and multitask it definitely can be challenging so I look forward to improving.

I was overworked at a dead end job in retail before I started as an intern here at Millennium Personnel Corporation. In desperate need of a career change, I began to reach out to recruiters and staffing agencies in New York City for temp or permanent jobs. However, most of my work experience was limited to retail so it was difficult to break into a new field, hence more of the same.
The internship program at Millennium Personnel Corp. offers an opportunity to learn social marketing and spice up my resume with a new, and very in demand, set of job skills. The staff is friendly and I’m gaining a lot of new job experience. Not to mention, being an intern is a great catalyst for a career change, which is just what I’m looking for. These days I’m a lot more optimistic about my chances at a better career. I’m excited about the doors this will open for me and I face this challenging job market with a new confidence.

What experiences that I wish to gain while interning at Millennium Personnel Corporation specializing in staffing employment for administrative assistants.
“Wish is such a dreamy word.” What experiences I will gain from Millennium Personnel Corporation while interning there: is time management, the building blocks of running a company, and leadership skills.
Time management is very important because if one person is late everyone is late. In the corporate world associates and managers work together to make that company a success on the market.
Organization, modern technology, leadership, team player, and learning are some of the building blocks of a company. Organization is important because planning adds order to the company. The corporate world is competitive, therefore keeping up with modern technology is mandatory. Being an excellent leader means knowing when to lead. “In the corporate world; everyone should be a team player because it’s important.” Running a company is a learning process. “So always be prepared to learn while running a company.” Knowing the building blocks of running a company is the main job as an employee because you may get that opportunity to run that company. Last but not least, there are so many different types of leaders within a company that help make the decisions that best suit that company’s needs. An excellent leader knows how to delegate and learn from other associates. Research is the most important thing to do before leading a team.
“Hands on experience is the best experience to have.” This will prepare me for Corporate America. The competition is endless. So does everybody have what it take to become a CEO in Corporate America?

My name is Lillian. I am writing a blog for the first time in my entire life. I did not know that I would write a blog as an intern. I am eager to learn tasks that can help me throughout my life. Just because I have a degree in English does not mean I should just focus on writing, if there are no jobs available. Doing clerical work as well as using the internet to communicate in this tough economy can help me reach one of my career goals.
I am interning to prepare myself for a career that requires knowledge of the business side of a writing career. I understand that whatever you do, an extra skill is beneficial. Since there are not many publishing jobs calling for an interview, I am going pursue freelance writing. The clerical/administrative skills from my internship will allow me to be more comfortable being in business by myself.
I was always told that, in this economy, when there are no jobs available in my field, I should start my own business. Writing is an art form, but to make money from a skill and a passion, there is a business side that is needed to be understood. I know that interning will help me be more comfortable with the business aspect in the future. People should never give up on their passion and skill. There is always a way to continue to pursue it even when the economy looks gloomy. My goal is to build a resume from my internship, pursue a Masters degree, and work as a freelance writer.

Millenium personnel has been an rewarding experience for me so far. I am now embarking on my third week at millenium which has lead me to more responsibility and more assigned task. I am very pleased with the progress that I have made since day one. Its pretty cool how I went from observing the daily operations to answering phones, understanding the concept of social networking on twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn. Millenium has a great office environment, everyone is friendly and helpful. Working at millenium has helped me become comfortable working in a office setting. I cant wait to put this useful experience on my resume.

My time working as a Marketing Intern for Millennium Personnel Corporation has been very profitable. I have gained valuable experience in the social networking sphere on sites such as Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter, while also helping with the revamping of our new website: mpc-nyc.com. In addition I have expanded my knowledge of office procedures while working with prospective employees and gained new QuickBooks skills while helping with the accounts. I have also improved upon my phone manner while calling clients and returning calls.
In return for my services as a Marketing Intern at Millennium Personnel Corporation I was given a revamped copy of my resume and a new cover letter. While I have not received any job offers at the moment, one of my fellow interns, Joseph has received a job offer thanks to his new resume. In addition Miguel, one of our other interns has received a temporary position working for one of our vendors.

This week at Millennium Personnel has been different from the prior weeks here.
I walked in Tuesday after President’s Day and was told that a person from Black Entertainment Television (B.E.T.) was coming in to interview people about the volatile economy and its racial impact on the African-American community. I was fortunate to be chosen as one of the interviewees for the project.
Initially upon Lainie telling me this news, I became nervous since I am not accustomed to being interviewed. To gain more confidence, I asked Lainie to conduct a mock interview with me, so I could become familiar with some of the questions that might be asked. After the mock interview, I took down some key points and later on called up my friend Denaul to let him know that he was invited for an interview as well.
On Wednesday, Sara from B.E.T. came in to interview some of the applicants and Millennium Personnel staff and interns. Having done the mock interview the day before, I glided through the interview with ease. I was very satisfied with the outcome because I overcame my nervousness.
In summary, I learned how to properly prepare for an interview and how to overcome any nervousness. I learned how to properly articulate myself in a way in which I didn’t stutter or think too long or hard on the questions asked. I was able to let it flow.
The part that had made me nervous is the fact that this is a major television network and if the person being interviewed doesn’t do well, the person may be completely omitted from the actual broadcast by the editors since good segments are favored.
I am grateful to be chosen for the interview and I look forward to doing more in the future if the opportunity arises.
