One lazy afternoon I was watching one of my favorite movies of all time, The Godfather. The quotes that came from this movie have lived on in pop culture since the movie was out and have been referenced in different commercials and movies alike. I have decided to find a few of these quotes and compare them to our current job market situation with the hope of providing some useful information to people who are still searching for a job and have the same love for The Godfather movies as I do.
“Don Corleone, I am honored and grateful that you have invited me to your home on the wedding day of your daughter.”Luca Brasi
First impressions and being grateful are very important when going on your very first interviewer for your potential job. Always research the type of position that you are interviewing for, and know the name of your interviewer to politely greet them when you first meet them. Be sure to thank them for the opportunity to meet and for the chance to interview for that position. As in any interview remember to come in and dress professionally, dressing for the job will show the interviewer you took the time to prepare for this interview.
“I don’t like violence, Tom. I’m a businessman. Blood is a big expense.” Sollozzo
Solloza is one of my favorite characters in the whole series. Every job seeker should think of themselves as a businessman who is selling their own skills and services to companies. Many times frustration and anger makes us say or do things in the workplace or an interview that will undoubtedly cost you the position or even your job. Patience is a virtue and going into an interview or work with a clear head will help you stay more relaxed and concentrate on the job at hand. In the end you will gain more by dusting your shoulders off and beginning a new day fresh.
“I want you to see what he’s got under his fingernails.”Don Vito
Both job seekers and recruiters can relate to this quote. Both are trying to get the best deal for their self gain. Recruiters want the best person for the job they are trying to fill in their company, while spending the least amount of money. Interviews are meant to find out the most about a person in the least amount of time. One is more likely to say something incriminating when under pressure, and this may not only cost you the job, but may also cost the company money. References should always be up to date and make sure the information in your resume is accurate and most importantly, the truth. Job seekers should also find out as much about the company as possible. Companies with shady histories or economic troubles can spell trouble for yourself in the future so keep in mind that just because they are offering you a job doesn’t mean they are economically sound or the nicest people around.
“I’m gonna make him an offer he can’t refuse.” Don Corleone
Finally, I had to include possibly the most overused quote in movie history! One can be grateful for a job offer but make sure you understand clearly any contracts that you sign and read over any company policies before making your decision. Get your offers down in writing, especially if you feel that they are too good to be true. This will insure that when you start your job there are no confusions about your pay rate, schedule etc. Make sure you know as much about the company before doing any business with them until you are comfortable and confident you can trust and perform the responsibilities that you will be given.
